The ramifications of bad journalism.

Initially, when Nettie brought this article to my attention, i laughed at it because expected nothing less from Today Tonight. I just thought it was hilarious how wrong and ridiculous they really were. However Nettie pointed out that many people watch this show and believe it to be credible, and upon reflection, i worry about how many people now believe Vietnamese people are dirty, unlawful criminals.

Media Watch make a very good point:

"The Vietnamese sting?

And in case you didn't get the message that this was about ethnicity, there was the Vietnamese flag to remind you.

Though what the family's business dealings - dodgy or not - have to do with their ethnicity is anyone's guess."

Today Tonight MUST be running out of ideas if they are pulling stunts like this. And what makes this even worse is Today Tonight's reply to complaints about the title, the Vietnamese Sting. I mean, what kind a of a title is that anyway? It is neither meaningful nor witty. But according to Craig McPherson (Today Tonight's Executive Producer)

"The title is a fair reflection on the report. This particular family was allowed to flourish at taxpayers expense because it was cocooned within a section of the Vietnamese community. As usual Media Watch is banging on with the vocal minority"

So not only are the accusing the Vietnamese community of protecting criminals BUT they are also insulting Media Watch!

And just to top it all off, according the Media Watch

"Seven's not alone in appealing to racist sentiment to boost ratings."

It makes me angry and sad that racism still exists in this country. A country that i am so proud to be a citizen of. A country that prides itself on multiculturalism.
